Love Island 2021 final: Fans urge ITV to scrap ‘pointless’ envelope twist as Millie and Liam win £50k prize

Love Island fans have called for the envelope twist at the end of the final to be scrapped after watching winners Millie Court and Liam Reardon split the £50k prize money.

On the final episode of Love Island, Kaz and Tyler finished in fourth place, followed by Faye and Teddy in third and Chloe and Toby in second.

After Millie and Liam were announced as the winners, host Laura Whitmore provided them each with an envelope, as is tradition for the final of the ITV series.

While one of the envelopes contains the £50k prize, the other won is empty, with the person awarded the mega jackpot offered the choice to take the full amount for themselves or split it with their partner.

In the history of Love Island, no winner has ever taken the prize money for themselves, always choosing to split it.

Despite some fans hoping this year’s series might end on a dramatic twist of someone finally stealing the cash, Millie – unsurprisingly – chose to share the money with her new boyfriend Liam.

Exasperated by the predictability of the moment, several fans expressed their desire for the segment to be removed from the show, not only due to the fact that it’s usually obvious what’s going to happen, but also because it can sound more complicated than it actually is.

‘The envelope bit needs to be scrapped, so pointless,’ one person tweeted.

‘That envelope bit at the end of @LoveIsland is possibly the most pointless thing I’ve ever seen on telly,’ someone else said.

Another fan wrote: ‘Can’t believe they still do this stupid envelope thing. Pointless.’

Meanwhile, one Twitter user remarked: ‘Jeeesus they need to scrap the money envelope bit tho, it’s painful!’

Until this happens in that stupid envelope bit at the end, #LoveIsland will always be inferior to Golden Balls. pic.twitter.com/1QDTw6Lunl

You both need to pick an envelope. You need two envelopes. You can both pick a colour. No pick the opposite colour. You can choose to share the money or keep it. LOVE! #LoveIsland pic.twitter.com/mzEPAOOHP4

Let’s just scrap the envelope opening and money but for next year please 🙄#LoveIsland

One person suggested that in future, the Love Island contestants should each write ‘share’ or ‘steal’ in an envelope before they enter the villa.

Then at the end of the series, the envelope would be opened to reveal ‘who was there for love or money to start with’.

We think that idea could be a recipe for lots of juicy drama!

During tonight’s final, just before asking Millie to be his girlfriend, Liam insisted that following Casa Amor, he would have told Millie about what went on with Lillie ‘straight away’ – if Lillie hadn’t made her shock entrance and revealed everything herself.

Faye revealed that she considered quitting Love Island during her early days on the show, telling Laura: ‘I didn’t want to be here. I wanted to go home. I hated it.’
