“You Can’t Go Racing Just Like That” – Joey Logano on COVID-19 Protocols and Vaccinations

Recently, news broke that Corey LaJoie would skip the NASCAR Cup Series race at Michigan. This was because he had to follow COVID-19 protocols after exposure to an infected person. Even though he insisted that he was fully fit, he was forced to sit out as a precaution. In light of this, Penske driver Joey Logano opened up on the situation.

He said, “Corey was exposed, and without having a positive test, you can’t go racing just like that. Even if you test negative, you can’t come back racing. That doesn’t settle well, I know that. It made all the drivers, I’m sure, very nervous after that, it makes you kind of check up what you’re doing.”

Logano revealed that he is changing his schedule in the wake of LaJoie’s troubles. He also confessed that this kind of situation puts many under a lot of pressure.

What else did Joey Logano say?

Owing to this, the Team Penske driver went and got himself vaccinated. However, he insisted that the decision lies with the drivers themselves and nobody can force them to do it. The driver is also aware that such a decision not only affects him, but many others around him.

Joey Logano even cited his 2014 Cup Series title as the perfect example of this. To be precise, when he won, his entire team were affected in a positive manner, in terms of bonuses, and other perks. However, something like COVID-19 affects many in a negative fashion. If he is forced to pull out, he would be “taking food away from people’s families.”

For the moment, the #22 driver will be looking ahead to the final regular-season race at Daytona. Beyond that, the battle for the 2021 Cup Series playoffs will begin. At this juncture, none of the drivers can afford to get sick, especially if they are in the playoffs.
