ABBA tease major announcement as they reveal ‘ABBA Voyage’ after 39 years away

ABBA have teased a major announcement next week, and we can barely contain ourselves.

The legendary band – Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson, Agnetha Fältskog and Anni-Frid Lyngstad – have not released new music in 39 years, instead leaving us with a back catalogue of all-time bops to whip out at every party.

But they have piqued our interest by promising a new project next week, entitled ABBA Voyage.

A tour? A single? An all-inclusive cruise? The mind boggles.

The group launched a brand new Twitter account this morning with the handle @ABBAVoyage, with the bio simply reading: ‘Join us.’

Its first tweet was a cryptic image of four glowing gold rings, over the date 02/09/21.

A link to the official website doesn’t reveal much else, but urged fans to sign up to a mailing list to be the first to learn about the announcement.

According to The Sun, ABBA Voyage will involve ‘ABBA-tars’, or holograms, of the Swedish stars as their younger selves, performing their biggest hits, like Waterloo, Dancing Queen and Mamma Mia.

The show will reportedly be accompanied by a documentary film showing the process from making new music to the building of a theatre in East London for the hi-tech show.

A source said: ‘Bjorn, Benny, Agnetha and Anni-Frid will all be there on the opening night. And they will finally unveil their Abba-tars, which are like holograms of themselves.

‘The show will feature the Abba-tars performing and speaking to the audience. It will be like taking a step back in time for those watching.’

The show will reportedly open in May 2022, but for those not attending, ABBA will also be releasing new music.

ABBA apparently had been working on the concept with Simon Fuller – the man behind the Spice Girls and Pop Idol – since 2019, but it was delayed due to the pandemic.

Back in 2018, they had revealed they had recorded new music while working on a ‘digital avatar’ project, which had initially supposed to be aired that December by NBC and the BBC.

Björn, 76, Benny, 74, Agnetha, 71, and Anni-Frid, 75, last released new music in 1981 when they released their eighth album The Visitors, featuring the songs When All Is Said and Done and One Of Us.
