The Darts singer Bob Fish has died at the age of 72.

The musician, who stormed the UK charts with his band in the late 70s, died at home on Sunday, surrounded by his wife Heather, and daughters Scarlett and China.

Music journalist and broadcaster Malcolm Cawley, known as BB Skone, said according to the Tivy-Side Advertiser: ‘He was a wonderful musician, from his time in char-topping rock ‘n’ roll revivalists Darts, up to his recent career as a roots country performer on the auto-harp.

‘I last saw him three weeks ago after his 72nd birthday, and he was still singing well, despite his terrible illness.

‘He stayed positive right to the end, with the support of his wife and daughters.’

Taking to Twitter after hearing the news, one fan wrote: ‘Sad to hear that Bob Fish of Darts is no longer with us.

‘Few bands brought as much excitement and energy to their allocated three minutes on Top of the Pops as Darts did.’

‘Sorry to hear about Bob Fish. I’ve still got a couple of Darts albums somewhere and I saw them live in 1982. They were great fun,’ another tweeted.

‘Sad news, R.I.P Bob Fish,’ a follower posted.

The Darts performed doo-wop rock ‘n’ roll music and they had 12 hit singles between 1977 and 1980.

The group has racked up a total of 14 gold and platinum discs – with Fish singing in a stand-out falsetto voice, featuring as the lead vocalist on some records.

He also became known for playing the auto-harp and played roots music as part of the White Doves duo.

A celebration of Fish’s life will be held on Wednesday 1 September at the Penquoit Centre near Cresswell Quay in Kilgetty, Wales.
