From Where Is Real Madrid Getting the Money for Kylian Mbappe From PSG?

Kylian Mbappe is one of the most lethal goalscorers in world football right now. Starting off his career with Monaco, Mbappe idolised Cristiano Ronaldo while growing up. The Portuguese’s influence was visible in Mbappe’s game as he bamboozled defenses with his pace and dribbling skills.

Over the years the Frenchman’s stock has only risen. While many cheered the arrival of Lionel Messi in PSG, the 22-year-old reportedly wasn’t the biggest fan of the same. In the same window where his idol also left his club, Mbappe might follow suit and is seeking a move to Spanish giants Real Madrid.

How have Real Madrid put such a formidable offer for Kylian Mbappe?

The 2020-21 season was arguably one of the most unprecedented seasons in football history. With no fans to watch the game and teams being extra careful to avoid COVID-19, clubs were pretty hard hit especially economically.

One of the worst hit was the La Liga giants Real Madrid. With huge wage bills and no sight of fans, the clubs were in massive debt. While Barcelona expectedly couldn’t spend much this off-season, Real recently have been heavily linked with the arrival of Mbappe.

Despite the possibility of getting him for free next summer, Real have submitted a whooping bid of €170 million to Paris Saint-Germain. But where is this money coming from? One of the biggest factors has been Real’s transfer policy for the last few years.

While they did splash the cash spending over €300 million in the 2019 transfer window, Real haven’t made any significant additions to the side. Sticking with the existing squad, Real took a massive gamble. Selling off young talented players like Achraf Hakimi for €70 million, Madrid were instantly making profits.

Not only Hakimi Madrid also sold surplus young talents like Theo Hernandez, Sergio Reguilon and Martin Odegaard. But perhaps the boldest off them all was the decision to let go off their defensive duo of Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane.

The Spanish giants in the last two seasons, have raised a whooping €181.5 million in player sales. Not only that, they also have a significantly reduced wage bill. Given all these factors, unlike Barcelona, Real are more than capable of bringing in Mbappe this season and have the money on the table as well.
