Drake fans aren’t happy as R Kelly lands writing credit on new album

Drake’s hotly-anticipated album Certified Lover Boy was finally released on Friday after being delayed for months, but fans of the rapper are not happy.

Many listeners have taken issue with the album’s eighths track titled TSU, which sees R Kelly credited as a writer.

The musician is currently on trial in US federal court on sex trafficking charges, after being accused of preying upon young women and teenagers promising fame in exchange for sexual favours – something he has denied.

Many fans of Drake saw his inclusion in the credits of his song as a gesture of support.

While Kelly did not actively collaborate on the track in the same way that the other co-writers of the song did – including Justin Timberlake and Timbaland – fans still took issue.

Drake’s song samples Kelly’s song Half on a Baby which some argued gives him an automatic credit on the track but it doesn’t necessarily mean he will receive any royalties or other form of payment for it.

‘People are defending this R Kelly credit, talking about “it’s a sample”…,’ wrote one fan on Twitter.

‘Okay?????? So Drake chose to sample his work, knowing he’d have to clear it with R Kelly, and that Kelly would get a check/royalties. He could’ve done away with the sample/track, he clearly doesn’t care.’

‘A lot y’all love to boast how your favourite artists are creative “geniuses” and then the moment you see them do dumb s**t like this, then you try to act like it’s outta their control [sic],’ another said.

‘Drake didn’t have to sample Kelly on a track that fetishises young Black girls at HBCUs.’

A Twitter user said: ‘The second you knew you’d have to credit R Kelly on your album wouldn’t you just remove the song?

‘On a 21 track album? It’s not like anyone is gonna miss it?? You needed it on the album that bad??’

Others also referenced how only last week, Kanye West also sparked a similar controversy by bringing out Marilyn Manson and DaBaby at the listening party for his new album Donda.

Manson currently faces allegations of sexual, physical and emotional abuse from four women, and DaBaby, who recently made homophobic comments related to HIV/AIDS.

Drake and Kanye have been in a very public feud for years now and fans also believe that one of the Canadian rapper’s new tracks takes a dig at the Yeezy designer.

‘Told you I’m aimin’ straight for the head. Now they “Amen” and “Please” I can give a f**k about who designing your sneakers and tees,’ he rapped.

‘Had somebody put you on a guilt and you play with my seed.’
