“Hola NY”: Juan Martin Del Potro Set For Tennis Return at US Open 2021

In recent times, Juan Martin del Potro has been a prominent player missing in action. A variety of injuries have plagued the 2009 US Open champion, and he hasn’t played a competitive match since 2019.

During his peak, the Argentine established himself as a fearsome player, often facing the ‘Big 3’ in various tournaments. While the US Open 2021 enters its business end, del Potro gave encouraging news to his fans on social media late yesterday.

Juan Martin del Potro returns to New York for practice

Earlier this year, the 32-year-old revealed he would return to Flushing Meadows, the home of the US Open. It is here where del Potro won his only Grand Slam title, defeating Roger Federer in five sets in an intense final. Furthermore, he revealed he would play on practice courts in the iconic tennis venue along with four-time US Open champion John McEnroe.

Yesterday, that admission turned into fact as the Argentine flew in to New York from Miami, Florida. Along with an Instagram post, del Potro also shared a story of him arriving in New York, with the caption, “Hola NY!”

The post featured a montage of iconic moments from his participation in the US Open over the years. The caption for the post read“Here we come!!! Wanted to let you know that I’m off to NY tomorrow to visit a tournament on Tuesday that’s massively special for me. What amazing times and so many brilliant memories!!!”

del Potro could return to the ATP Tour in 2022

Since he last played in 2019, the Argentine underwent four knee surgeries between then and now. Although he looked to return at the Tokyo Olympics, he couldn’t recover in time from the last of those four knee surgeries, which took place in March.

However, he took to practice courts on more than one occasion in the last few months. Although he may not take part in any tournaments this year, he could return early next year. Given he’s only 32, the Argentine could engage himself in a career resurrection should he return in 2022.
