Love Island’s Brett Staniland speaks up for LGBT community after being targeted by homophobic trolls: ‘Calling me gay will never offend me’

Love Island’s Brett Staniland has spoken up for the LGBT community after trolls called him ‘gay’, using the term as an attack.

Brett enjoyed a brief stay in the Love Island villa after being coupled up with Priya Gopaldas before swiftly giving her the ‘ick’.

The 27-year-old PHD student has since revealed that there has been speculation surrounding his sexuality, which he doesn’t mind at all, until trolls become homophobic.

‘Calling me gay will never offend me,’ Brett wrote on his Instagram stories, according to Gay Times.

‘It does not affect me one bit. But when you choose words in a way so that being gay is deemed as wrong, that is when I have an issue with it.’

He added: ‘Homophobia will not run at all on here.’

Love Island itself, however, still hasn’t accepted any gay contestants after claiming that including the LGBT community into its line-up would be a ‘logistical nightmare’.

ITV boss Kevin Lygo doubled-down on this theory only last month at the Edinburgh TV Festival.

‘It’s about boys and girls coupling up, so if you want to do it as a gay version or you want to widen it, it is discussed and we haven’t yet found a way that would make it suitable for that show,’ he said.

At the other end of the spectrum, Married At First Sight UK welcomed its first gay couple and broke a viewing record for E4 as the most watched series opener on the channel ever.
