Three WILL charge EU roaming fees from 2022 – after 8 years of ‘free data’

THREE is bring back roaming charges for Brits travelling in the EU.

The levy was scrapped back in 2013 – but is being reintroduced next year.

Customers will have to pay £2 a day when roaming in the EU from May 23, 2022.

Three was the first network to introduce “Go Roam” eight years ago, and will be a huge disappointment to long-time customers.

But it’s no surprise: the past few weeks have seen EE, Vodafone and O2 all reintroduce some roaming charges for Brits.

Three says the changes will only affect new customers who have taken out a contract on or after October 1.

That means you’ll be able to snap up an expected iPhone 13 contract before the deadline.

Any existing customers who renew their contracts after October 1 will face the new charges.

“The new charge ensures that customers are clear on what they will pay when using their phone in another country,” a Three spokesperson told The Sun.

“And only those who roam will pay for the service.

“It will also ensure that we can continue investing in our UK network.”

The Sun understands that it was too difficult for Three to absorb the underlying costs – and that free roaming was no longer commercially viable.

Three’s new charges are simple enough: you’ll pay £2 a day while roaming in the EU from May 23, 2022 onwards.

In Go Roam destinations outside the EU, the cost rises to £5 a day.

For other locations, prices will vary.

And there’s a data cap in place set at £45 – you’ll be updated via text to avoid a bill shock.

This counts for all EU GO Roam destinations.

Three recommends turning roaming off and using public WiFi where possible to reduce costs.

Roaming prices

EE says that it will charge a £2-a-day flat fee to access their UK bundle in 47 European countries from January.

Vodafone is charging £2 per day from January 6 to roam in 49 European destinations.

O2 has imposed a “fair use” charge if customers use more than 25GB a month while abroad.

Three will charge £2 a day from May 23, 2022 in all Go Roam destinations.
