Dr Alex George shares moving message for World Suicide Prevention Day: ‘There’s always hope for a better day’

Dr Alex George poignantly marked World Suicide Day on Friday, drawing from his own experience following his brother Llŷr’s death last year.

Taking to Instagram to share the details of charity Samaritans, the 30-year-old, who deleted his Twitter account in August to encourage people to protect their mental wellbeing, described the day as ‘really triggering for me’ but pushed on to share a message of hope.

Alongside a picture of a blue heart with the message ‘Asking for help is not a sign of weakness, it’s a sign of strength’ inside it, Alex wrote: ‘Today is really triggering for me, what gets me through is the hope that it’s a chance to reach those who are silently suffering.

‘On World Suicide Prevention Day I want to remind you that you are not alone. This year especially, has been so hard and there is absolutely no shame in asking for help.

‘You are loved. People care. Don’t struggle alone. There is always hope for a better day 💙 @samaritanscharity 📞 116 123.’

The A&E doctor also posted a video message to his Stories, to spread his message further.

Talking to the camera, he said: ‘Today is World Suicide Prevention Day and just a message for me that if you’re listening to this, and you’re struggling, and you feel alone, you’re not alone.

‘Please don’t give up. Call Samaritans, speak to someone, get support. There’s always hope for a better day.’ 

Llŷr took his own life aged 19 in July 2020, shortly before he was due to take up a place at medical school.

Alex paid public tribute to his brother on the anniversary of his death this year, sharing a sweet family photo and admitting ‘some days I really can’t accept or understand that you are not here’.

He continued: ‘You give me so much strength, even when times are tough and it would be easy to give up. Mum, Dad and Elliott are doing ok, they miss you so much too.

‘I would do anything to go out for a spin in the car with you again. Love you x.’

Since his brother’s death, the former Love Island contestant has involved himself with mental health campaigns, including one for better mental health education in schools.

Since February, he has also been the Youth Mental Health Ambassador, as appointed by Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
