Furious residents face recycling bin delivery delays of up to 14 WEEKS

OUTRAGED residents are facing delays of up to 14 WEEKS to get a recycling bin as requests have surged to an “unprecedented high”.

Hundreds of people living in Glasgow are impatiently awaiting the arrival of their bin blue as the number of people wanting one has skyrocketed this year – with the council processing more than 5,500 demands for one just this year.

That compares to just 2,800 in 2016.

Councillor Anna Richardson confirmed at Glasgow City Council’s meeting on Thursday that requests for additional blue recycling bins had skyrocketed, reports GlasgowLive.

“We are viewing this as an indication of Glasgow residents’ commitment to recycling,” she said.

“Due to this demand delivery times have also increased from the more usual six to eight weeks.

“Officers are now taking steps to reduce these times by allocating extra delivery crews to this service.

“I am hopeful this situation will resolve in the coming weeks as a result of the additional resources being put in place.”

It comes as councils across the country face ongoing rubbish bin collection delays as driver shortages continue.

The Local Government Authority (LGA) released a report last week showing 46 per cent of councils in England and Wales experienced disruptions to their bin collection services in July.

Meanwhile, at least 18 councils across the UK are said to be still experiencing disruptions as of last Friday.

Experts estimate the nation faces a huge shortfall of 100,000 drivers.

The shortage is causing supply chain issues to several industries, leaving supermarket shelves empty and forcing many restaurants, takeaways and coffee shops to take items off the menu.

It has been blamed on a range of factors such as staff self-isolating due to Covid and European drivers returning home after Brexit.

The pandemic has also brought DVLA testing centres to a standstill, creating a huge backlog of drivers waiting to take their HGV test, it is said.
