Matt thinks Rhys would be a ‘brilliant’ candidate for the Doctor (Picture: Rex/Shutterstock)
In July this year, it was officially confirmed that Jodie would be leaving Doctor Who after playing the Thirteenth Doctor since 2017.
However, Matt – who played the Eleventh Doctor from 2010 to 2013 – believes Rhys should be considered.
‘You know who I think would be a brilliant Doctor Who… Rhys Ifans,’ he responded. ‘Rhys would be sort of cool.’

Matt added that he’s unsure if a Welshman has been cast as the character before, providing even further reason for Rhys being put forward.
‘I don’t know if we’ve had a Welshman yet. I’m backing Rhys!’ he stated.
Rhys has been a part of blockbuster franchises in the past, having played Xenophilius Lovegood in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 and Dr Curt Connors, aka The Lizard, in The Amazing Spider-Man.
With that in mind, we have a feeling Rhys could fit in pretty well to life on the Tardis.
The latest prediction from bookmaker Ladbrokes is that there’s now a ‘two-horse race’ for Jodie’s replacement, with Olly having odds of 4/1 and Michaela having odds of 5/1.

Nonetheless, this summer Olly’s manager addressed the speculation, saying that the It’s A Sin star could be cast in Doctor Who ‘just isn’t true’.
‘Even though Olly is often contacted by Cybermen, I’m afraid I have to exterminate this speculation,’ Martha Kinn said.

‘As nice as it is to see interest in this story regenerate, it just isn’t true.
‘As ood as it might sound, Olly is focusing on his music, for the time being.’
Season 13 of Doctor Who is set to launch later this year.
