Manchester United ace Rashford wrote: “Look at that bounce back @EmmaRaducanu US Open champion, amazing. Congratulations.”

Lineker – who was presenting Match of the Day at the time – tweeted: “First time in my life I’ve ever tweeted whilst on air but my goodness what a performance, what a triumph, what an amazing young woman.

“Congratulations @EmmaRaducanu on a truly staggering achievement. US Open winner at 18 without losing a set. Extraordinarily fabulous.”

Michael Grande tweeted: “Sports Personality of the Year will be a foregone conclusion.”

‘IT’S A JOKE! UNBELIEVABLE’

And British tennis icon Tim Henman was courtside and was full of emotion after Raducanu’s win.

He said: “It’s an absolute joke, I’m shaking and my legs are like jelly.

“I can’t believe how resilient she was and the quality of tennis. These champions find a way to get it done.

“She executed at such a high level. On the day Raducanu was too good.

“She made it look ridiculously easy but she has the mental toughness in spades.

“Such good quality but she has the belief, she’s never blinked. She had a medical timeout serving for the match – it’s a joke, unbelievable!

“She is going to win more of these, she’s not some flash-in the-pan fairy-tale.

“Her world is going to go upside down and it’s going to be one hell of a ride as long as she can stay injury-free.

What a winner. A true British hero. Congratulations @EmmaRaducanu on an inspirational win. From qualifier to champion without dropping a set. A phenomenal achievement. #USOpen

Emma Raducanu sensationally wins the #USOpen on her debut. Aged 18. As a qualifer. Without dropping a set. Weeks after A Level results. Unprecedented. One extraordinary athlete. Undoubtedly the first of many Slams. To think some had the audacity to question her mental fragility

“If you could say she would qualify and win a round she’d have signed for that in a heartbeat.”

Although most of the pre and post-match reaction to Raducanu’s achievements was positive, Piers Morgan decided to repeat his ‘choke’ jibe just before she took to the court.
