Creative Arts Emmys 2021: Meghan and Harry’s bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey loses out to Stanley Tucci’s food series

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry may have created the most talked-about moment on TV, but the couple lost out on winning a Creative Arts Emmy this year.

In March, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex sat down with talk show icon Oprah Winfrey to detail for the first time their experience of life as senior working Royals and why they chose to quit the UK.

It ended up being an explosive hour of TV with Meghan and Harry accusing one unnamed member of the Royal family of making a racist statement about their unborn son Archie, which the Firm has denied. 

The Oprah interview was nominated in the best hosted nonfiction series category at the Emmys, however, they lost out to actor Stanley Tucci’s Searching For Italy, a travel and food series. 

They were both up against David Letterman’s My Next Guest Needs No Introduction, CNN’s well received United Shades Of America With W. Kamau Bell and Showtime’s Vice. 

Meghan and Harry did not make an appearance at the virtual awards ceremony, which aired on Sunday night. 

The pair, who now live in California, are taking several months off this year to spend quality time with their daughter Lilibet Diana, who was born in June. They are also parents to two-year-old son Archie.

Their candid sit-down with Oprah was the couple’s first television interview since their decision in early 2020 to quit their royal duties. According to CBS, the special was watched by more than 49million people worldwide in the first three days. 

During the interview, Meghan opened up about how her mental health suffered while living under scrutiny in the British monarchy. 

The Duchess revealed she had suicidal thoughts, saying: ‘I just didn’t want to be alive anymore.’

She said she begged for help, and asked to go somewhere to get help, and approached one of the most senior people in the institution, but was told it would not look good.

Perhaps the most shocking reveal was Meghan’s claims that when she was pregnant with Archie, an unnamed member of the royal family raised ‘concerns and conversations about how dark his skin might be when he’s born’.

Asked whether there were concerns that her child would be ‘too brown’ and that would be a problem, Meghan said: ‘If that is the assumption you are making, that is a pretty safe one.’

Harry also opened up about his strained relationship with his brother Prince William. 

The Creative Arts Emmys precede the Primetime Emmys 2021, which takes place on Sunday.
