REVEALED: F1’s Reason for Controversially Punishing Verstappen for Scary Hamilton Crash at Monza

One of the talking points of the Italian Grand Prix was the horrific crash between Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton. As the two title contenders were heading into turn one, the Dutch driver went onto the kerb, which launched him on top of the 7-times world champion.

Both found themselves on the gravel, and out of the race. However, the FIA brushing it off as a racing incident, they instead think the Red Bull prodigy should be given a penalty for his actions at the Italian Grand Prix.

The reason for Max Verstappen’s penalty at Monza

As Hamilton was coming out of the pits, Verstappen was zipping down the main straight, hoping to overtake the Brit. However, Hamilton was going to back down either, and as the battled into turn one; Verstappen hit the kerb, which launched his car onto the Mercedes, taking him into the gravels and out of the race.

After reviewing the footage, the FIA found that Verstappen was not alongside Hamilton until significantly into turn one. The maneuver which Max did was too late and hence didn’t have “the right to racing room”. However, they think that the number 44 driver could have steered away from the kerb to avoid the incident, but think his position was reasonable. Hence, the FIA thinks that Verstappen is to be blamed for the accident.

What penalty will Verstappen receive for the next race?

The title race between Max & Lewis couldn’t get more exciting after the events at the Italian Grand Prix. Both of the title protagonists were out of the race. However, it wasn’t brushed off as a racing incident, as Verstappen will be given a three-place grid penalty.

With a week off from the world of racing before the Russian Grand Prix at Sochi. Max would hope to tackle the obstacles that await him, and grab a good result for Red Bull.

The Dutch driver still retains the five-point gap that he has over his arch-rival, Hamilton. He hopes to extend that lead in Sochi and keep the Mercedes driver in his rearview mirrors.
