“They Did Everything in Their Power”: Leylah Fernandez Credits Canada for US Open 2021 Success

19-year-old Leylah Fernandez earned a huge name in tennis after her brilliant run at the US Open 2021. Even though she ended up as the runner-up of the Grand Slam after losing to Emma Raducanu in the finals of the Grand Slam, the rising star defeated three out of the top five-seeded players in New York.

In a recent interview to Today with Hoda & Jenna, Leylah Fernandez opened up about role of Canada in her success. She revealed that it is a proud feeling for her as she did a commendable job for the nation that gave her and her family almost everything.

“It means the world [to bring the silver plate back home]. You know, Canada has been so kind to us. I guess, they opened their doors for us. They gave us opportunities for my grandparents to work and to keep fighting,” said Fernandez in the interview.

Fernandez highlighted that as immigrants, Canada really helped her and her family in a great manner. She believes that the nation has been so kind to her and the constant support from it is one of reasons for her incredible run at the US Open 2021.

Leylah Fernandez discloses that Canada gave ample amount of opportunities to her parents

Even though Fernandez was born in Laval, Quebec, she along with her family moved to Canada. Her father hails from Ecuador while her mother is a Filipino Canadian. In the same interview, she also highlighted that Canada welcomed her family with open arms and it is because of the great nation that she has a smile on her face today.

“They gave opportunities to my dad and to my mom. All these opportunities- they took advantage of and they did everything in their power so that me, my sisters, and my cousins can have a great life and we can keep going and keep fighting and having that smile in our faces,” added the emerging star.

After the US Open 2021, it will be intriguing to see where will Leylah Fernandez play next. Fans have huge expectations from her and want her to achieve many more laurels in the future. Will she be able to end the year among the top 20 WTA players?
