Andy Serkis and Cynthia Erivo will be joining Idris Elba in the upcoming Luther film, which was previously confirmed to be starting filming this month.

Idris will reprise his role as DCI John Luther, a dedicated police officer with a brilliant mind but struggles to straddle the line between good and evil, in the feature-length film.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Harriet star Cynthia, 34, is playing a rival detective while Andy, 57, best known as Gollum in The Lord Of The Rings trilogy, will take on the role of the villain.

Cynthia’s performance’s as Celie in The Colour Purple on Broadway won her a Grammy, Tony and Emmy, leaving her an Oscar away from the coveted EGOT title.

Described by Netflix as ‘an epic continuation of the Luther saga reimagined for film’, the project will reportedly see Luther faced with two new challenges.

Idris couldn’t hide his joy at the news about the long-awaited adaptation of the popular BBC series when it was confirmed earlier this year.

The TV favourite, 49 said: ‘I’m so excited about it, it’s been a long time coming. We’re very, very close to pulling the green light on production.

‘Luther has all the ingredients to echo those classic films of the 90s like Seven and Along Came A Spider.

‘I think what we’d like to attempt is use that as a blueprint to create it. It will be more murder, more Volvos, more frowning ‘Luther’
