My little boy screams the house down when we put him to bed

DEAR DEIDRE: MY little boy screams the house down as soon as he goes to bed.

We have a good bedtime routine where he has a bath, I brush his teeth and then read him a story.

If I try to leave the room, he gets out of bed and cries loudly

No issue is too small, too large or too embarrassing. Read our personal replies here.

He is two and a half and I am his 33-year-old dad.

I’ve tried reading more stories and sitting beside his bed, but he just won’t stop.

If I try to leave the room, he gets out of bed and cries loudly. I know he isn’t hungry or thirsty, so I don’t know what the problem is.

He has also started crying when I drop him off at nursery.

My wife, his mum, is a nurse and works shifts so I regularly do the bedtime routine. I really don’t know what to do any more.

DEIDRE SAYS: He may be scared of the dark so install a night light or leave the door slightly open.

Calmly and confidently remind him that he’s fine in bed and in his room.

After five minutes, check in again to let him know you’re still there and he’s doing a great job of staying in his room.

Continue checking in, extending the time between check-ins until he’s fallen asleep.
