Games Inbox: PS4 to PS5 free upgrades, Half-Life 3 hopes, and Dragon’s Dogma 2 excitement

Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection – does Sony need to rethink their policies? (pic: Sony)

The Wednesday Inbox is shocked at how many games were mentioned in the Nvidia leak, as one reader worries about the Knights Of The Old Republic remake.

Standard policy
I really am kind of shocked that Sony keeps slipping up when it comes to cross-gen. They like to project an image of brooding superiority, only rarely making pronouncements to their fans and it always being what they want to hear. Except it’s not. Seemingly every time they reveal anything now they seem to immediately get themselves into trouble with regards to whether a game is on PlayStation 4 or not and whether you can upgrade to it for free.

The Uncharted remasters are another example, where they’re basically trying to make you pay for the same games twice despite the upgrade in performance seeming to be more minor than many free upgrades. It’s just a complete mess, with no consistency, no rules, and no way to predict how things will work… except that whatever Sony announce they’ll have to backtrack on a few days later.

Just pick a policy, tell us what it is clearly and unambiguously, and then stick to it. Even if it’s unpopular at least we’d know what to expect, instead of having to go through a circus every time a new game is mentioned. For a company that has so little communication they should be getting things right a lot more often than this.

And by getting things right I mean making all their upgrades free. Just do it willingly, don’t be dragged into it after the PR damage has already been done.

Too many secrets
When I first saw the GeForce Now leak I just assumed it was someone adding things based on rumours and educated guesses but now it looks like it is all, or mostly all, true? All I can say is that someone at Nvidia most be frantically polishing up their CV right now.

So what is the most surprising game listed? We’ve never heard of Gears 6, Tekken 8, and Monster Hunter 6 before but they are kind of givens. Kingdom Hearts 4 is too but it’s surprising to hear about it so soon.

A Half-Life 2 remaster is completely out of the blue and maybe a warm-up for Half-Life 3? Like Crysis 4 was for its games? Fight For Middle-Earth could be anything and XCOM 3 is surprising given Firaxis has only just announced Midnight Suns – so I’d hate that to be one of the ones that’s wrong.

Bioshock 2022 we did technically know about, but it hasn’t been officially announced and next year is definitely a surprise. There’s just so much stuff in the leak I barely know where to start, and all those PlayStation 5 games on PC? And even Bayonetta 3? If all this ends up being true I don’t know that there’s many arguments left for even owning a console.

There’s certainly an argument for not telling Nvidia any more secrets though, all these publishers must be livid!

Adding context
Wow, that Nvidia really was something, eh? Call Of Duty 2022 already leaked, a secret Xbox game and about a dozen major sequels that we’ve never even heard mentioned before. Plus remasters of GTA: Liberty City Stories and Half-Life 2? It’s basically E3 but without any of the trailers!

Since we have no context for any of this I’m going to guess that Liberty City Stories is a PlayStation exclusive, since Rockstar clearly have a close relationship with Sony on GTA 5 but haven’t announced any exclusive content yet.

Half-Life 2 remaster sounds like something you’d do to build up to Half-Life 3, no? Which has actually been rumoured given Valve are apparently interested in making games again. Basically every past and future PlayStation 5 game though? That is going to wind up a lot of console fans, especially if Bayonetta 3 is true as well.

Nice to see Dragon’s Dogma 2 finally get leaked though. I’d prefer an official announcement but if that turns out to be true I’ll remember where I saw it first. Thank Nvidia, I hope you don’t get sued!

Still crying out
The outcry has died down now, but what did you make of the strange backlash towards the Saints Row reboot? I’m calling it Saints Row 5 in my head just for the sake of my own peace of mind. I mean, I can sympathise with wanting it to look better – but to say it looks hideous? And outright bad? Based on… what? A trailer less than three minutes long? Um… aren’t we jumping to conclusions?

It does look reminiscent of Fortnite but it does look better than that. And any other Saints Row so far. Okay, it’s not cutting edge – it’s not up there with Capcom’s recent efforts, for example – but the last time this series even tried to look good was way back in Saints Row 2. Which looked… alright. For the time.

Focusing on a brand new cast is a little sad, but let’s face it, the Saints Row franchise only has three great characters: Johnny Gat, Stoner Shaundi, and Kinzie. And Johnny and Kinzie are almost guaranteed to have cameos. They did say there would be cameos, right? But until next February rolls around, we don’t really know. Alas, this is the Internet…

GC: We saw more than was shown publicly and we weren’t impressed, and we don’t care about the old characters at all. It’s definitely not Saints Row 5 though. If there are cameos, they’re implied to be very minor or just vague references.

Cue applause
I thought GAME’s PlayStation 5 queuing system showed promise. For one, a 9am start time for joining the queue seemed achievable for many more people, rather than in the wee small hours. But also the webpage shows a handy countdown timer so you can leave the browser open and go about your business rather than remain tethered to your device, constantly hitting refresh.

I didn’t get one, probably because it wasn’t until 10am on the day that I saw your PlayStation 5 restock article but also because I, no doubt like most other hopefuls, resolutely wanted just the PlayStation 5 rather than plump for one of the many extensive bundles GAME offered. I’ve got plenty of T-shirts to wear in bed or use for DIY jobs already thanks GAME.

If possible, it’d be nice if their super-queue-matic system spoke to its stock-level-o-tron so that you get dumped from the queue before the countdown ends if the console or bundle you want gets snapped up by those in front of you rather than letting you get through, click add to basket only to be told, ‘Naaaah’. But other than that it seemed like a fair system. Was anyone else luckier than me?

Pineapple hands
I have to agree with the disgruntled fans disliking the trailer for the current-gen update of Grand Theft Auto 5. Like many, I’ve found Rockstar games’ meagre output, not including GTA Online, very disappointing over recent years. An issue compounded when you remember how often they were releasing gaming gold during the PlayStation 2 era. Bully and The Warriors are two personal favourites from that period, and I also have to mention their table tennis game, which was great fun to play and fantastic looking at the time.

To be honest I’m far more intrigued by the possibility of the remakes/remasters of Grand Theft Auto 3, Vice City, and San Andreas. I absolutely adored them when I was younger; too young to be playing them in fact. I’ll never forget the experience of playing GTA 3 for the first time at a friend’s house and being amazed that I could just drive around at my leisure, exploring the world, killing its inhabitants.

There was recently an Inbox regarding real-life moments or objects that remind you of a video game, my belated contribution would be pineapples reminding me of the PlayStation 2 Grand Theft Auto games. Actually, of the changes I’d most like to see is the removal of the disturbing pineapple hands that the denizens of each game seem to be blighted by. I genuinely find them distracting during cut scenes, and I still find it impossible to not be reminded by them when I walk down the fruit isle in a supermarket and see pineapples. I can only imagine how much more horrifying they would look in 4K.

Surprise score
Just wanted to say fair play and kudos for review of Deathloop and sticking to your guns. Bad pun, sorry! I say this as the Internet is awash with 10/10 and best thing since sliced bread reviews. Not sure how many of those reviews are on impartial and one of the reasons I use you in your various forms since Teletext days.

Keep up the great work, all the best.
TWO MACKS
PS: 7/10 is a good score, before people’s heads start exploding with rage.

GC: Thanks. We were very surprised to see some of those scores. As relatively entertaining as it is we really can’t fathom giving it anywhere close to 10/10, given what we thought to be its very obvious flaws.

An old hope
I’ve been seeing a lot about the Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic remake on PlayStation 5 in some different subreddits and other sites, as well as GC.

At first I thought it was a nice surprise, but now I can’t really see the point of it. It’s obviously going to look pretty on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X but that’s about it. I played it on the OG Xbox and I loved it, but just like everyone else who played it back then, or maybe on Game Pass at some point, we know how the story plays out. We know what happens to Bastilla and we know what the big reveal at the end is going to be.

It just seems pointless to remake it when a new game would have been really something to get excited about. I don’t understand why a remake is a better proposition than an entirely new game, with maybe new characters and obviously a new story.

The Star Wars universe is massive so why revisit Knights Of The Republic when there are so many options open to the developers and publisher?
Mitchell

GC: We do share your concerns, but the reasons for doing a remake are obvious: it’s cheaper and easier. Also, Disney’s unhealthy obsession with canon requires the original game and characters to be officially added into the modern lore, before they can again be counted as an official part of the mythos.

Inbox also-rans
Guessing from the negativity about the GTA 5 trailer I was the only one who noticed the smoke cloud from explosions has been improved. That’s something.
Tundra

My favourite reveal from the Nvidia leak is… Wreckfest 2! Yes, love that game! And a Vanquish remaster, and XCOM 3, and Crono Cross remaster but not Chrono Trigger? This really is the mother of all leaks!

This week’s Hot Topic
The subject for this weekend’s Inbox was suggested by reader Ishi, who asks what video game franchise do you feel is the most consistent?

A lot of famous franchises have celebrated their 25th or 30th anniversaries recently and are still pumping out new games but which do you feel has been the most consistent across its long history? Have any reached a point where you’ll now buy them on name recognition alone or are you still cautious about each new entry?

What do you attribute the franchises’ consistency to and do you feel it’s kept up well with modern trends? If not, what new directions would you like to see from it in the future?
