Gabrielle Union has addressed the ‘trauma’ of discovering Dwyane Wade was having a baby with another woman while she struggled to conceive.
The Bring It On star has been married to basketball legend Dwyane since 2014, having dated since 2008.
However, while on a break in 2013, Dwyane conceived a child with his friend Aja Metoyer, and in a essay published by Time from her new book You Got Anything Stronger?, Gabrielle has said she was ‘shattered’ by the revelation.
The 48-year-old wrote: ‘In 2013, before we were married, Dwyane had a baby with another woman. It should go without saying that we were not in a good place at the time that child was conceived. But we were doing much better when he finally told me about the pregnancy. To say I was devastated is to pick a word on a low shelf for convenience.
‘There are people—strangers I will never meet—who have been upset that I have not previously talked about that trauma. I have not had words, and even after untold amounts of therapy I am not sure I have them now.’
The pregnancy was even harder to handle as Gabrielle had struggled to conceive due to a diagnosis of adenomyosis – a condition which causes the uterus to thicken and enlarge – and had suffered multiple miscarriages.
The LA’s Finest actress said: ‘The experience of Dwyane having a baby so easily—while I was unable to—left my soul not just broken into pieces, but shattered into fine dust scattering in the wind.
‘We gathered what we could to slowly remake me into something new. There was no way to disguise where I’d been glued back together.’
Xavier was born in November 2013 to Dwyane and Aja, and the NBA star married Gabrielle the following August.
Dwyane previously discussed the moment he told his girlfriend he was having a baby with another woman in the ESPN documentary D. Wade: Life Unexpected, released in 2020.
The 39-year-old said: ‘Hardest thing I’ve ever had to do is man up and tell Gabrielle Union that I’ve had a child with somebody else. I couldn’t sleep. I wasn’t eating.
‘When you hold something in that you know is going to come out and you have this information and you know it’s gonna f*** somebody’s life up, that you care about, that you love, if it don’t hurt you, then you’re not human.

‘Me and Gab just went through something that you never want to go through and we still came out of it.’
Gabrielle was told that her likeliest option of becoming a mother was via surrogacy, and although she continued to go through gruelling IVF treatment for a year after her doctor’s recommendation and considered taking a drug that would help her conceive but cause brittle bones and early menopause, she and Dwyane eventually agreed to opt for surrogacy.
Their daughter Kaavia was born in November 2018 via C-section via surrogate Natalie.

Gabrielle is also stepmother to Dwyane’s two children from his first marriage to Siohvaughn Funches, son Zaire, 19, and daughter Zaya, 14, who came out as transgender when she was 12 years old.
Dwyane also raised his 18-year-old nephew Dahveon.
