“Too Stretched Out”- God of War Director Explains Why There Won’t Be a Third Game in the Norse Mythology Series

God of War Ragnarok is poised to be one of the most long-awaited sequels in gaming history. Following the humongous success of the first title, fans have a lot of expectation about the upcoming game. The developers at Santa Monica Studios announced the title last year during the PlayStation 5 reveal event. The hype for it has also increased recently with its showing in the PlayStation Showcase.

However unlike the previous series of the franchise, the developers had announced that the current story will end with the sequel. Fans have loved the Norse Mythology series featuring Kratos and his son Atreus, and they would love to see more. However, the developers feel that it wouldn’t be necessary.

Three God of War titles set in Norse Mythology would take up a lot of developmental time

Recently, God of War Directors Cory Barlog and Eric Williams talked about the future of the franchise with YouTuber Kaptain Kuba. The developers had announced earlier that the Norse Mythology series will end with the sequel titled God of War Ragnarok. During the interview, Barlog mentioned that they had a lot of reasons to not do a third game. However, he noted that the primary reason was the story would be stretched out a lot.

“We’re talking like a span of close to 15 years of a single story, and I feel like that’s too stretched out.”

Along with that, he also mentioned that it will also take up a lot of time to do another one of these games. God of War took around 5 years to develop before it arrived for the PlayStation 4 in April 2018. Other than that, Barlog believes that God of War Ragnarok would also require a similar time frame to develop for the PlayStation 5. So, if they do go for a third title, it would mean that this one story would have taken 15 years to make, which they felt was too long.

“I feel like we are asking too much to say the actual completion of that story taking that long just feels too long.”

Third game might saturate the main storyline between Kratos and Atreus

Cory Barlog also observed that they don’t require a third game to showcase the main storyline. The Norse Mythology series mostly revolves around the relationship between God of War Kratos and his newfound son Atreus. He noted that they can add a lot of stuff to this story in the game. However, it would deviate the plot away from the relationship, which the developers don’t want to.

“The complexity radiates out like ripples in a pond and we could make it an ocean and make those ripples go for thousands of miles. But is that necessary and is that beneficial?”

The sequel to one of the most storied franchise will have a lot of new content including unique enemy types. Players might be disappointed to hear that there won’t be a third title. However, it looks like Santa Monica Studios will go out with a bang and conclude a storyline that fans have loved a lot.
