“Feel Sorry for Him”: Daniil Medvedev Relates With Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic

Russian tennis player Daniil Medvedev has impressed one and all with his performance over the past couple of months. The World No. 2 managed to win his first Grand Slam title at the US Open 2021. He beat the man in form, Novak Djokovic in straight sets in the final.

Recently, Daniil Medvedev spoke about the words exchanged between him and Novak Djokovic at the net. He went further into history, relating to situations in which Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and the Serb were involved in gruesome matches over the years.

The 25-year-old player stated, “I said sorry to him,” Medvedev revealed when asked what was said between him and Djokovic following his win. “Tennis is such a brutal sport — there are two guys and one is going to lose no matter if it’s the first round or the final. I always watch Novak, Rafa [Nadal], Roger [Federer] play these finals and I feel like every time in the speech they’re sorry for their opponent because they know how it feels.”

Daniil Medvedev did something no player could

Medvedev stopped Djokovic from creating history by winning all four Grand Slam titles this season. As happy as he is for himself, he felt sorry that the Serb’s quest couldn’t be completed.

The US Open 2021 champion added, “I stopped Novak from doing something crazy and unbelievable in tennis history and I do feel sorry for him. I’m happy for myself but I do feel sorry for him, that’s what I said and yeah, Novak is such a great guy that he just said I deserve everything and he really hugged me and that’s unbelievable.”

The Russian certainly deserves to enjoy his moment; he played a fantastic tournament and only dropped one set in his entire run. However, it will be interesting to see if he can back up his first Grand Slam with more such performances.
