Robert Durst, the subject of true crime documentary The Jinx, has been convicted of the murder of his best friend, Susan Berman.

In 2000, Berman was found dead aged 55 in her Beverley Hills home after being shot in the head.

21 years later, Durst has been found guilty of killing Berman to stop her talking about his wife’s disappearance.

His sentencing is scheduled for October 18.

In 2015, HBO aired a documentary miniseries, The Jinx, about Berman’s murder.

In the chilling final scene, Durst leaves his microphone on when he heads for a bathroom break during an interview. He is heard saying to himself: ‘What the hell did I do? Killed them all, of course.’

The Jinx shot to prominence when Durst was arrested a day before the finale aired.

Durst, now 78, was labelled a ‘narcissistic psychopath’ by prosecutors.

His wife Kathleen McCormack, a medical student, went missing in 1982 and is presumed dead.

Her family issued a statement after the verdict on Friday, saying: ‘The justice system in Los Angeles has finally served the Berman family.

‘It is now time for Westchester to do the same for the McCormack family.’

Prosecutors argued that Durst also murdered his elderly neighbour, Morris Black, who discovered his identity in 2001.

However, he was acquitted of Black’s murder, successfully arguing that he killed him on the grounds of self-defence before cutting up the body.

Filmmaker Andrew Jarecki helmed The Jinx, one of the most prominent true crime documentaries of recent years.

Recalling the moment he came across his ‘smoking gun’, the final scene, Jarecki told Good Morning America in 2015: ‘I sat there in the edit room with my partners Mark and Zach, and we just sort of shook our heads.

‘And it took a while to really understand the impact of it. It was so chilling to hear it. It was disturbing.’

Jarecki went on to deny that he had a hand in Robert’s arrest in a New Orleans hotel room the day before the episode six finale aired.
