WATCH: NASCAR Star Plays SpongeBob Song for Bristol Motor Speedway Intro

Ahead of any NASCAR Cup Series race, there is always a pre-race event where the drivers are introduced to the fans. Before the Bristol Motor Speedway race, Garrett Smithley came forward for his introduction. On an amusing note, he stepped up while a SpongeBob song ‘Sweet Victory’ by David Glen Eisely played in the background.

Needless to say, the likes of Daniel Suarez and Matt DiBenedetto saw the funny side of this moment. It was also worth noting that Suarez was wearing a sombrero as he watched Smithley on the stage.

How did NASCAR driver Garrett Smithley perform this season?

So far in the 2021 NASCAR Cup Series, the #53 driver has been hovering around the Top 30 or the edge of it. At the Bristol Motor Speedway, he finished in 30th place, ahead of teammate Josh Bilicki.

Meanwhile, his season-best finish is 25th at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway. On the other hand, his career-best finish is 24th, which came at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in the 2020 Cup Series season.

On an interesting note, Smithley is competing in place of Cody Ware. This is because Ware was subjected to carbon monoxide poisoning at the Darlington Raceway. As a result of this, the Rick Ware Racing team advised him to miss the next two races, which included Richmond and Bristol.

Suffice to say, Garrett Smithley was more than willing to step in as a substitute for Bristol. Meanwhile, JJ Yeley took over the reins at the Richmond Raceway. Now, Smithley will be hoping to have a few more good races under his belt for the remainder of the season. Nevertheless, he will be keen to enjoy himself for the next seven races and prove his mettle.
