M8 crash: First pictures of three killed in horror early-morning motorway smash as man arrested

THE death of three pals who died after a horror car crash on the M8 has “rocked” their community, locals have said.

Manveer Benning, 27, David Paton, 27, and Mark Downie, 31, have been named locally as victims of Sunday morning’s tragic motorway smash.

Emergency crews were called to the collision near Bishopton, Renfrewshire, shortly after 5am – but the trio were pronounced dead at the scene.

Another five pals – including the driver – were taken to hospital for treatment.

The Audi Q7 was left on it’s roof in a ditch following the one-car incident.

Cops confirmed that a 35-year-old had been arrested following the horror crash.

Sarah Hunter said online: “RIP boys and deepest condolences to the families. This has rocked Greenock and the wider community.”

Jeanette Spiers said: “Absolutely heartbreaking, thoughts go out to these three families and their friends and all the others involved. Such a shame.”


Louise Primrose added: “I saw the screens shielding the accident scene today and my heart sank knowing that it was likely a fatality. Rest in peace lads. Tragic.”

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: “We can confirm that a 35-year-old man has been arrested in connection with road traffic offences following a crash on the M8 at junction 31 westbound around 5.05am on Sunday, September 19.

“Enquiries into the circumstances surrounding the incident remain ongoing and anyone with any information is asked to contact police on 101 quoting incident number 0860 of 19/09/21.”
