“Incredibly Irritating”: Andy Murray Refuses to Give Advice to US Open Winner Emma Raducanu

Three-time Grand Slam champion Andy Murray recently mentioned he wouldn’t give the newly crowned US Open winner, Emma Raducanu, any advice unless she asks for it.

After clinching the 2021 US Open trophy, Raducanu became the first British woman in 44 years to win a tennis Grand Slam singles title. She defeated Leylah Fernandez in the final.

Murray, whose triumph at the 2012 US Open ended Britain’s 76-year wait for a male Grand Slam champion, feels Raducanu’s historic victory would lead to her receiving a lot of unsolicited advice.

Andy Murray won’t wade in with advice

During an interview ahead of the 2021 Moselle Open in Metz, Murray revealed he hated ex-British tennis players giving unnecessary advice after every victory or defeat of his.

Knowing the unwanted pressure it builds, Murray spoke he doesn’t want to be that person in Raducanu’s life. However, he promised to “always be on the end of the phone” to help Raducanu if the 18-year-old seeks his guidance.

“I never really liked it when all of the ex-British tennis players were always wading in after every win and loss about what you should be doing, what you shouldn’t be doing, and a lot of them also giving advice when you haven’t asked for it as well. I found it incredibly irritating – and still do today. I don’t want to be that person,” said Murray.

Post the US Open victory, Raducanu has jumped to a career-high ranking of World No.22 in the WTA rankings. The tennis sensation has also become a darling of the media. After becoming an overnight superstar, she has attended American chat shows, made a fashionable debut at the Met gala, and also graced the London Fashion week.

Meanwhile, Murray faces Ugo Humbert in the opening round at the Moselle Open. The Briton leads 1-0 in his head-to-head meeting against Humbert.
