Where happens to leftover food on Great British Bake Off?

The Great British Bake Off returns imminently and we simply can’t wait.

Tonight, 12 new hopefuls are entering the tent with the sole aim of officially becoming 2021’s best baker.

Channel 4’s competition series is bound to bring baking-related joy and sugary sweetness into our lives as the pandemic continues and winter looms in the distance.

During past seasons, viewers couldn’t help but wonder what happens to all of the glorious cakes and other baked goods once Prue and Paul have finished judging – and the cameras stop rolling.

So, where does all that leftover food go? Here’s what we know.

What happens to the cakes on Great British Bake Off?

When former contestant Kim-Joy appeared on The Big Fat Quiz Of The Year at the end of 2018, the GBBO finalist revealed what happened to all the baked goods after each episode had been recorded, finally putting our curiosity to rest on the matter.

In response to Jimmy Carr asking: ‘When you’ve finished with the cake and the judges have had a little bit, what happens to the cake?’

‘The crew will eat it,’ Kim-Joy said. ‘They’d know the best ones, so they all descend on the bake.’

The show’s Chief Home Economist, Faenia Moore, confirmed Kim-Joy’s confession but also revealed that the contestants themselves get to try their own creations.

She told BBC Good Food: ‘It’s important for the bakers to eat what they’ve slaved over, so after each challenge I make up a ‘baker’s basket’ to go to their lunchroom.

‘Then any leftovers go to the crew’s lunch. Everyone gets quite excited.’

Chetna Makan, a GBBO contestant from the 2014 series, agreed with Faenia that the contestants definitely help make sure nothing goes to waste.

In an interview with Digital Spy, she said: ‘It’s not just the cameramen who swarm over the food, we [the other contestants] definitely do it too.’

That’s settled, then. But it does leave us with one more question…

How do we get a job on the crew of Great British Bake Off?!
