Nikita Mazepin Makes a Brutally Honest Revelation on His Relationship With Mick Schumacher

Struggling at the back of the grid ever since the beginning of the 2021 season, Haas haven’t really put up a fight to any of the other constructors this season. However, one must not think that they aren’t related to any competition this season. They definitely are, the only difference is, the competition is inside the team.

Nikita Mazepin and Mick Schumacher, both F1 rookies, stepping into F1 with the same team—it’s no surprise that they would come at each other’s necks a few times. Nikita Mazepin spoke in the Formula 1 podcast “Beyond The Grid” about his relationship with Mick.

Not a smooth ride at Haas

Mazepin and Schumacher have had quite a lot of ‘coming together’ this season. The latest being in Monza when the Russian caused a collision due to which Schumacher spun. Before that, in Zandvoort, Mazepin pushed Mick onto a bollard. The incident wasn’t well-received when it came to Mick, obviously.

When asked about what is going on between the two drivers, Mazepin explained “There’s a lot going on and at the same time nothing”. He further explained that they are two young drivers who aspire to reach the very top. And it’s pretty evident from the way the season has played out—the only opponent Nikita has is his teammate, located one garage away—and the same applies to Mick too.

“Finishing 19th can be a highlight and 20th place can be a really bad weekend. It’s ‘all or nothing’.”, said Mazepin. “I don’t know how many more years we have together, but I don’t think it’s going to be a smooth ride.”

Nikita Mazepin and Mick Schumacher go back a long way

Mazepin has known Mick Schumacher for years. They were teammates when they were in the karting scene. Even back then, it wasn’t really easy between the two, in Mazepin’s words.

“You have a personality outside of the track and your competitive personality, which is often not the nicest. But it makes you work harder and sometimes leads to victories.”, the Haas driver said.

This description quickly brings to mind Mick’s father, Michael who, even though was a very lovable character off the track, had quite an unscrupulous nature when he was on the track.

However, Nikita emphasizes: “I like Mick with all my heart. He is a super talented boy. He has achieved an incredible amount in his career.“, said Mazepin

It’s only a matter of time before they get back on the track again, and we can only speculate if there are going to be even more coming together, or will the pair behave themselves–something that Gunther Steiner would be hoping they do.
