Ellie Goulding has opened up on motherhood and the ‘camaraderie’ she felt with other mothers after having her first child.

The singer, 34, welcomed her first child with husband Caspar Jopling, 29, in April, and says that she finds motherhood to be ‘surreal’ but a bonding experience with other mothers.

She told Tatler: ‘It’s just surreal. But when I have moments of anxiety, I go back to the billions of women who have been in the same situation, so I try to be totally pragmatic about it.

‘There’s a huge sense of camaraderie among new mums, not only dealing with being pregnant, but then breast-feeding, and just figuring it all out.

‘It seems like motherhood is a time when you can never say too much about what’s going on, and I’m grateful for that.’

Ellie and her art dealer husband share son Arthur Ever Winter Jopling, whose birth they revealed with an announcement in The Times.

The singer, who is Tatler’s November cover star, married Caspar in August 2019 in front of a star-studded congregation at York Minster.

The couple announced their pregnancy through a magazine photoshoot after keeping it under wraps for seven and a half months.

Ellie explained: ‘Most of my friends and family were shocked. It wasn’t on the cards, but it wasn’t off the cards either – we’d had such a wonderful first year of marriage.

‘I didn’t tell anyone but then I got to a point when I was ready for people to know.’

The Burn star previously admitted that motherhood was never a life goal of hers because she loved her freedom, but found that the role came naturally to her all the same.

She told You Magazine in August: ‘I was always great with other people’s kids, but becoming a mother wasn’t necessarily one of my goals.

‘After we got married, people kept asking when we were going to have kids, and I would say, “I don’t know if I will. I really love my job. I love my life. I love my freedom.”’

However, the music star added that motherhood has come ‘really naturally’ to her, explaining: ‘I’ve never felt any disconnect or confusion about what I’m doing.’
