“Last Point We’re Gonna Win”: John Isner Vows to Take Down Alexander Zverev After Doubles Defeat at Laver Cup 2021

Team Europe dominated the day one of Laver Cup by managing to win three out of the four matches against Team World. Despite losing all the singles matches of the day, John Isner and Denis Shapovalov from team Red managed to register their first victory over team Blue, which had Alexander Zverev and Matteo Berrettini teaming up for the first doubles match of the season.

Team Europe won the first set comfortably, 6-4. Both Berrettini and Zverev didn’t let Isner and Shapovalov take charge and dictated most of the rallies. In a tightly contested second set, both the teams put up their best efforts.

But, it was Team World who got the better off Matteo Berrettini and Alexander Zverev in the tie-breaker. With both the teams taking a set each, the result was decided on a ten-point match tie-breaker.

Team Europe tanked this tie-breaker as they turned out be no match for John Isner and Denis Shapovalov. In the end, Team World managed to win the breaker, 10-1 and registered their first victory of the day.

After the match, there was a bit of chatter from Team World players as they discussed what Alexander Zverev was saying post defeat.

McEnroe: “Fuck this guy.”

Isner: “He said that? Fuck him…”

Schwartzman: “What did he say?”

McEnroe: “He said that’s the last point we’re gonna win.”

Opelka: “He also said he’s innocent.”

McEnroe: “Yeah, good point.”

Post defeat, the German told that it would be the last point Team World’s going to win this season. To that, John Isner wanted to take revenge against him and appeared to have said, “I want to make this personal”

As the discussion was going on, John Isner himself tweeted that it wasn’t what he said during the meeting.

That’s not what I said but go on”, commented the American.

Things got heated between the two teams at the end of day one as Team world players were all eager to give their best on the next day.

But, things didn’t seem to go their way so far on the second day. Nick Kyrgios lost to Stefanos Tsitsipas in the first match of the day in straight sets. But, Isner has a chance to produce his best against Alexander Zverev in the second singles match of the day.
