Olivia Rodrigo wowed at Saturday’s Academy Museum of Motion Pictures opening Gala, rubbing shoulders with Hollywood’s brightest in a daring dress with a plunging neckline.

The 18-year-old singer looked sophisticated and ultra-glamorous in the floor-length black Saint Laurent gown, which featured a cut-out structured neckline that dropped all the way to her sternum in the middle, just about covering her modesty.

The Good 4 U singer looked worlds apart from her usual bright colours and playful looks, but let her dress, which also featured a thigh-high slit, do all the talking.

The elegant dress also featured the practical addition of pockets, not something every dress wearer necessarily anticipates.

The star wore simple black strappy heels and no jewellery, with her hair tied up in a bun save for some loose strands left down to frame her face.

Olivia’s conversation-starting (or stopping) designer dress retails for a cool $4,590 (£3,354), and the haute couture look put her right at home at an event where guests included Brad Pitt, Lady Gaga and Cher and saw honours for Hollywood legend Sophia Loren, as well as Tom Hanks, Annette Benning and former Disney CEO Bob Iger, who were all recognised for their fundraising efforts for the museum.

The $484m (£353m) museum was originally slated to open in 2017, after decades of fundraising false-starts and construction before the recent pandemic-related delay.

Housing displays of Oscars, Black Panther costumes and a pair of Dorothy’s ruby slippers from 1939’s The Wizard of Oz, the museum opens to the public on September 30.

Drivers License chart-topper Olivia has had quite the year, releasing her debut album Sour in June, which netted her her first UK number one album, as well as two number one singes and a further two top five tracks.

She had previously been best known for her role as Nini in High School Musical: The Musical: The Series as well as earlier appearances on the Disney Channel.

As well as her meme-worthy trip to the White House in July to help with the US government’s Covid vaccination drive, the star also performed at the MTV VMAs in August, walking the red carpet in a striking pink and orange fishtail gown with matching earrings.
