“Tanked Four Tie-Breakers:” John McEnroe on Team World’s Shabbiest Loss at Laver Cup to Roger Federer’s Team Europe

It was yet another disappointing season for John McEnroe’s Team World at this year’s Laver Cup as they lost to Team Europe for a fourth consecutive team. Unfortunately, Boston fans couldn’t get the opportunity to see all the four matches scheduled on day three as team Europe raced ahead to 14 points after victory in the first doubles match.

Both Zverev and Rublev took their team to victory against Denis Shapovalov and Reilly Opelka of Team World. Despite team world fighting hard to win the match, they were outplayed by Borg’s team in the match tie-breaker.

Team World gave a few spirited performances during this year’s edition of Laver Cup but fell short in match tie-breakers. Their doubles performance was far better than the singles as they failed to play it big in crucial points of a match.

But, the team showed promise with debutants like Felix Auger-Aliassime and Reilly Opelka proving their merit as they have a bright chance to participate in next year’s event in London.

However, the sad part of McEnroe’s team was that their crowd-puller Nick Kyrgios would have possibly played his last match in Laver Cup. According to what the Aussie told yesterday, it will be highly unlikely for Team World to have Kyrgios in their rooster for next year’s edition.

John McEnroe is all praise for Team Europe after their fourth Laver Cup crown

All in all, it was a difficult loss to digest for the team captain John McEnroe, who had nice words to say about his team and the spirit with which they played the event. The American legend also praised Team Europe for putting up a commanding display once again.

“These guys are a great team, no question. Incredible team. They had good team spirit as well. We did as well. Obviously, if you get a couple of different results, could have put more pressure on them”, told McEnroe.

“We gave it our best but they were too good.”

Throughout the event, Team World lost four match tie-breakers to Team Europe and McEnroe believed that it had a strong influence over his team’s performance in the rest of the matches.

“But, we just came up short. Tanked four tie-breakers. If we have those, it’s a totally different story. Even other matches, we would’ve a chance to get in. So, we gave it our best but they are too good”, concluded the American.

It would have been great to see team World win this year’s Laver Cup in-front of a positive crowd at TD Garden in Boston. But, players like Stefanos Tsitsipas, Matteo Berrettini, Casper Ruud, and Andrey Rublev gave outstanding performance for Team Europe which ensured their victory.
