EA Edging Closer to Renaming its FIFA Title with Latest Trademark
EA is thinking of getting rid of its long-running FIFA name for some better alternative. The news absolutely caught people off-guard and has been a hot topic in the general community. The publisher is now looking at different options to rename the all-running game. Now, a recent trademark filing on the websites of the United Kingdom Intellectual Property Office and the European Union Intellectual Property Office has emerged, which might finally give players some hint towards the new name.
EA might rename FIFA to EA SPORTS FC
The newly emerged filing reveals that the publisher might be thinking of renaming the virtual football game to “EA SPORTS FC.” As can be seen from the report, the filing is dated October 1. The news of EA abandoning the FIFA name came on October 7, which suggests that the replacement was a long-time coming.
In their blog post, EA Sports chief Cam Weber announced, ” this means we’re reviewing our naming rights agreement with FIFA, which is separate from all our other official partnerships and licenses across the football world.”
EA pays huge sums of money to FIFA for its branding and licensing deals, and the publisher dropping the title comes as no surprise. FIFA 2022 is getting good feedback from the players despite it being an incremental update. But will EA commit to “EA SPORTS FC” for later installments is still up to anyone’s guess.
The long-running series has been the synonym for virtual football among players and has been released annually since the first installment in 1994. For better or for worse, the successor of FIFA 2022 will sport a new name. It can even be entirely different from what’s mentioned in this filing.
This is because companies usually do multiple filings before fixating on one option. So, we might end up with a completely different name altogether. What name do you think EA should go with? Let us know in the comments.
