Joe Burrow’s Gruesome Injury Against Packers Only Proves Why Lamar Jackson Was Right About Quarterback Protection

Football once again proves why it’s one of the most dangerous sport in the world. Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow suffered a harrowing injury against the Green Bay Packers, which needed urgent hospitalisation. Burrow reportedly suffered a possible throat contusion, which his teammates realised after he was unable to speak.

Facing Aaron Rodgers and Green Bay Packers is no easy task. However, Joe Burrow and Cincinnati Bengals threw the kitchen sink at their tough opponents. While they got steamrolled in overtime, their performance was more than valiant. The injury to Burrow is nothing short of unfortunate, but proves his mettle as a risk-taking quarterback.

Burrow wasn’t the only quarterback to suffer a serious injury in the past ten days. Last week, Seattle Seahawks’ star QB Russell Wilson split his finger after a collision with Los Angeles Rams’ Aaron Donald. Even New York Giants’ Daniel Jones suffered a head-to-head collision, leading to him leaving the field.

Quarterbacks are not the most likely ones to take hits, but we’ve witnessed certain quarterbacks speak out about additional protection. Recently, Lamar Jackson pleaded with the NFL to take measures to protect quarterbacks from taking big hits. And the incident with Joe Burrow simply proves why Lamar’s points shouldn’t have fallen on dead ears.

Burrow was rushed to the hospital after his teammates claimed he could not speak. Medical consultant Dr. Timothy Kremchek described Burrow’s situation and said, “If people have trouble breathing or your voice changes, you’ve got to be very aware with someone who got hit in the throat that they don’t have significant injuries. Typically, they’ll go to the hospital and be evaluated by a CAT Scan just to make sure there are no fractures or threatening injuries.”

Burrow wasn’t the only throat contusion victim

The brutality of the hit Joe Burrow took is something the NFL often sees, but it doesn’t often result in such drastic injuries. If anything, Burrow’s injury is a blatant display of how athletes put their bodies on the line. However, he wasn’t the only one to suffer a throat contusion this week.

Cleveland Browns’ linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah also suffered a similar injury, and was hospitalised. It isn’t clear when and how Burrow or Jeremiah will return to the gridiron, but we offer nothing but the best to the talented athletes.

The NFL will need to take some drastic measures to reduce the risk of such serious injuries. While Darnell Savage of the Packers wasn’t exactly at fault, his tackle may lead to some changes to the NFL’s rules regarding quarterback protection.
