Major Championships Prize Money: Comparison Between Men’s and Women’s Golf

Golf is one of those sports where prize money tends to be on the higher side. However, along with prize money, a player always wishes to win a major championship. However, major championships aren’t the highest paying events in golf for both men and women. In men’s golf, it’s the Tour Championship, while in women’s it’s the AIG Open.

Meanwhile, if we compare men’s and women’s major championships based on their prize money, then the difference is quite visible.

Just like every other sport, even in golf, men’s payout is far greater than women’s. So let us have a look at the difference in prize money between men’s major championships and women’s major championships.

This sport has one of the highest gender pay gaps in sport

Even though female golfers are among the highest earners in sports, they are still way behind their male counterparts, especially in the major championships. Moreover, even though women’s golf has five major events every year, their payout is noticeably lesser when compared to men’s golf.

Meanwhile, the Open Championship, U.S. Open, and PGA Championship are three major championships common between men and women. However, men’s first-place prizes are all more than $1million higher than women’s. In the 2021 men’s U.S. Open winner received $2.25 million, while in the women’s event, the winner received $1million, which is less than half.

Moreover, the same story continues with the remaining events as well. An interesting thing to note here is that no male golfer receives less than $1.82 million after winning a major championship. But in women’s golf, apart from U.S. Open, no other major event pays the winner $1 million.
