Canelo Alvarez Reveals Why He Doesn’t Wish to Fight David Benavidez

Canelo Alvarez is the face of modern-day boxing. In his 16-year career, the p4p star has left a mark in umpteen weight classes. Given the fact that he is just 31, his fans will get to see him fight for many more years to come.

The p4p star always looks to test his prowess against the best of champions and challengers. That’s why all of his fights are highly alluring. However, over the past few years, the Mexican star refrained from battling his compatriots and there’s a reason behind the same.

Recently, Alvarez, who was in a chat with Brian Custer, revealed whether he would ever fight a Mexican-American boxer like David Benavidez.

“Like I say, I represent Mexico, so that’s why I don’t like to fight with Mexican fighters anymore. But you know when you need to fight with somebody, so why not,” he responded.

In his vast boxing career, Canelo locked horns with a few of his compatriots. A few years back, he faced Mexican pugilists like Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and Alfredo Angulo. However, that hasn’t been the case over the last couple of years.

This wait could extend to 2022 as his next opponent, the last hurdle in his pursuit of undisputed glory at 168 lbs, is an American in Caleb Plant.

Until now, Alvarez has removed every roadblock (Callum Smith, Avni Yildirim, Billy Joe Saunders) from his way ever since he shifted his focus to the 168-pound landscape. However, he needs to vanquish Caleb Plant to win the IBF title and create history.

Saul Alvarez is a definite favorite to win this fight because his record, punching accuracy, stamina, and power are better than Plant. Also, he is way more experienced than ‘Sweethands’. Hence, Canelo can definitely claim the undisputed tag.
