Games Inbox: Rockstar’s next video game, Metroid Dread difficulty level, and EA Sports FC abbreviation

Is it GTA 6 or nothing for Rockstar? (pic: Rockstar Games)

The Tuesday Inbox has more recommendations for retro style indie games on Switch, as one reader looks forward to Modern Warfare 22.

Never again
I don’t know about GTA 6 never coming out, but I think that Reader’s Feature is certainly right that we’re not going to see it any time soon. GTA 5 on next gen consoles basically guarantees it won’t come out for at least three years after that and probably more.

The question I’m more interested in is what are they going to do next? If GTA 6 is three or four years away, at a minimum, is there going to be nothing in between? Is there no hope of a smaller project, like they used to make?

Back in the day Bully, one of my personal favourites, was a relatively small project but because it’s open world making a sequel nowadays would still be a huge job of work. So big that I don’t see it ever happening. In fact, if I’m honest, I’m not sure I can see Rockstar ever going back to making small or medium sized games again.

Can anyone seriously see them doing another Table Tennis game, or Max Payne 4 or Manhunt 3 or anything like them? It’s a shame because there’s so much talent at Rockstar but it’s locked up in an online-only game that may never see a proper sequel again.

The right way
I got my copy of Metroid Dread Saturday morning and was pleased to see my Switch was behaving itself after downloading the necessary updates.

Thing is though I’m not enjoying the game all that much, haven’t been having any fun with the trial and error of trying to find the correct route to escape the white E.M.M.I. and find the Omega Cannon. I keep going the wrong way, running into the E.M.M.I. and dying. Over and over.

I’m going to try and sell it for half price this week, I just can’t see myself persevering with it for long enough for it to click.

To be honest I’ve never really enjoyed the gameplay mechanic of being stalked by an enemy you can’t kill, but I gave Metroid a go anyway even after seeing trailers of the E.M.M.I. in action. It looked good and I thought maybe I’d learn to enjoy it, but nope.

GC: There is no right way or correct route. Just watch where the E.M.M.I. goes and don’t let your paths cross. That area is very small, so it shouldn’t take more than a minute or two to get to get to the power source.

Unanswered questions
I actually have some questions about the GTA 5 that they will come out with on the new PlayStation. If someone has the answers or can get them but my main question is, is Rockstar going to make another GTA Online? Will they do something that will benefit all players, not just certain players?

For instance, will they make it to where people who just want to do jobs and missions have a public lobby so they can do so and make a public lobby for people who just want do a lot of griefing to other players? Also, there are people who uses cheats or hacking into other accounts, so many different types of issues that most people, including myself, don’t really want to play because of these and other issues.

GC: Rockstar has offered very few details on the new versions, so it’s hard to say. However, they have recently started to streamline the Jobs and missions available for GTA Online, with a promise to improve matchmaking in general – which may address some of the issues you have.

Third time unlucky
I expect you’re probably too busy, but wondered if you’ll be reviewing the Switch version of Disco Elysium (or if you were even sent a review copy)? I’ve been waiting patiently for it to come to Switch and was planning to download and play it on release this Tuesday.

I haven’t found any reviews or impressions online, yet which has me a little worried about the port. Really hope it runs well, it feels like I’ve been waiting forever to finally try out this game!
Jammo

GC: It’s a long, complex game that most other sites, including us, have probably reviewed a couple of times already. There’s no new content so it’s really just a case of seeing whether there are any technical issues – which should become evident fairly quickly.

Personally approved
Reader Mehrab asked for some retro/indie games on Switch. There are so many but I would recommend The Messenger, which is my top choice, Cuphead, Celeste, Golf Story, Limbo, Inside, The Bridge, Crypt Of The NecroDancer and if you want to play some of the old classics you can get all the Doom games pretty cheap and I recently bought the Castlevania collection, which is a great deal and I think there is a Contra collection as well. I enjoyed Duke Nukem 3D World Tour and if you like 2D Mario games, Super Mario Maker 2 is a must and has an endless amount of levels.

I’m sure other readers can recommend more but those are the games I have played myself and enjoyed.

Work experience
Why is it I have the worst feeling about all these Konami rumours? I know we’re all assuming eFootball is a separate thing and it being a disaster doesn’t reflect on their other games but are we really that confident? This Virtuos studio that they’ve got to make the Metal Gear Solid 3 remake, assuming that’s true, seems to have zero experience with that sort of thing. If there’s an opposite of getting Bluepoint to do it, it seems to be these guys.

All I can say is that Metal Gear fans better hope that the rumours aren’t true. Or maybe they should hope they are because the absolute disaster this is likely to turn out to be will probably convince Konami to give up for good.

For a company that makes the most of its money from gyms and other things that have nothing to do with gaming I don’t know why they don’t sell the whole thing off to Sony or something and be done to it. Instead they seem intent on running the games’ names into the ground until they’re not worth anything anyway.

Missing Dread
I too have not received my copy of Metroid Dread. I ordered the standard edition from The Game Collection.

9 times out 10 my pre-orders arrive on the day of release, Fridays. I’m writing this on Monday night and still no sign of it!

Just wondering if anyone else is in the same situation or have GC heard of any issues?

Local post office depot are useless as their openly times are very limited and differ from day to day due to Covid and are nigh on impossible to contact outside my working hrs.

First time I’ve ever thought about going digital for first big party games in future.

GC: Since it’s the same game but different retailers maybe there’s been a general problem with stock, although there’s been no official announcement.

Change of subject
I really hope that if the next Call Of Duty is Modern Warfare 2 again that they have some fun with the name and the fact that it will be 2022. Modern Warfare 2 2 could actually be its name!

I’m looking forward to it, because I liked the story campaign in the last one but I’m not sure why they story is so completely different from the original. How did we get from terrorists and Russian chemical attacks to South American cartels? Seems a bit of a leap and a downgrade in danger levels.

Same game, different name
EA Sports FC is a bit of a rubbish name isn’t it? It can see it makes sense at first sight but what would shorten it to? No one’s going to say the whole thing every time so what are you supposed to choose instead? EA FC? You can’t just say FC or EA, that’d be pretty meaningless.

Doesn’t matter what it’s called, of course, as the important issue is EA’s disgusting attitude to loot box. The thing about money ruling everything being realistic is just… I don’t have the words.

The bottom line is that loot boxes make them too much money and they’ll only be dragged away from them kicking and screaming by someone else, which is never going to happen.

I really wish that eFootball had worked out as a reasonable alternative but it’s anything but, which means football fans basically have two choices: play FIFA or play nothing. Nobody’s going to choose the second option and EA know it, which is why they’re never going to change.

Inbox also-rans
Chris Bruzzo’s take on loot boxes really sets the scene for what we can expect from FIFA in the future. EA are the scummiest in my opinion.

I’ve no doubt the GTA trilogy remasters are going to be £70. I’m surprised they’re not more to be honest, considering they know they can charge whatever they want and people will still pay it.

This week’s Hot Topic
The subject for this weekend’s Inbox was suggested by reader Bernardo, who asks what is your favourite platform game?

It can be a 2D or 3D platformer but which have you enjoyed the most and why? Do you enjoy the genre in general and are you happy with how it’s evolved over the years? What do you think have been some of the best new ideas to appear in recent years and how do you hope things will change in the new generation?

You can include games that are parts of other genres, such as Metroidvanias, as long as the platforming is the main gameplay element.
