The island chain has three main islands that attract visitors – Sal, Praia and Boa Vista – with most resorts concentrated around the stunning white beaches of Sal, which also boasts visitor-friendly facilities and towns.

Tour operator TUI has direct flights into Sal and some brilliant bargains on stays on the island this winter, plus it also offers packages to beach resorts in Boa Vista.

Holidaymakers who like to get out and about can choose a hotel close to the main town of Santa Maria to dine on local Portuguese-influenced cuisine and experience the local culture, while Boa Vista is much more geared towards beach holidays.

Blessed with bays of platinum sand, Boa Vista even has its own mini Sahara, with silky sand dunes created over centuries of trade winds carrying it from the African desert.

Nestled beside the sand dunes, TUI Palace Boavista Resort offers a heavenly base for a beach holiday, and TUI has all-inclusive packages to the hotel from £796pp this December for the perfect pre-Christmas treat.

While TUI is the main tour operator to the island, check out some tempting deals from online travel agent Thomas Cook holidays, with packages to Santa Maria in Sal from £883 for 7 nights in smart apartments with kitchen and lounge areas.
