Iga Swiatek Admits of Crying Over Novak Djokovic’s Loss at US Open 2021 but Says She Is Not a ‘Fan’

Even though there are a lot of tennis stars that showed their merit on the WTA tour over the past few years, Polish young tennis sensation Iga Swiatek would be right on top when it comes to playing aggressive tennis amongst the next-generation of women’s singles players.

Having won the French Open last year after defeating the likes of Simona Halep and Sofia Kenin, Swiatek, Swiatek managed to win a couple of more titles this year at Adelaide and Rome.

At the on-going WTA 1000 event at Indian Wells, the Polish player is taking advantage of slow hard-court conditions that suit her game and reached the pre-quarters without losing a set. In the round of 16, Swiatek faces a tough opponent in Jelena Ostapenko.

After her third-round victory against Veronika Kudermetova, the Pole was asked to answer a quick True or False questionnaire on several areas in tennis.

An interesting answer from Swiatek came out when she had to answer whether she is team Novak or not.

“No. False. I’m sorry”, out came the replay from her as she continued, “I was cheering for Novak to win the Calendar Grand Slam this year because I feel like he deserves it. And if there is anybody that can win a calendar grand slam, it’s going to be him. So, I was crying basically when he lost the final of the US Open”.

“Since I was a girl, I am team Rafa”- Swiatek reveals adulation for Rafael Nadal yet again

It’s known to the tennis world that Iga Swiatek is a huge fan of Rafael Nadal as she concluded by saying, “But since I was a girl, I am team Rafa”. 

Despite being a fan of Nadal, Swiatek’s explanation for why Djokovic deserved to win a calendar grand slam resonates with a lot of tennis fans across the globe as everyone who watched his US Open run wanted him to script his name in the record books.

However, the Serbian star is sure to have a lot of chances in the future but he might have to beat a lot of youngsters consistently at slams to create further records under his name.

If either Nadal or Federer starts to find their groove next year, it could get even difficult for Djokovic to win majors with stiff competition from both his peers and from next gen players like Daniil Medvedev, Stefanos Tsitsipas, and others as well.
