Will Poulter is joining Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 as powerful superhero Adam Warlock, who was teased at the end of the previous film.

Director James Gunn confirmed the news, tweeting: ‘As you guys know I often strike down false rumours, so… um… Welcome to the Guardians family, Will Poulter.

‘He’s an amazing actor and wonderful guy. See you in a couple weeks.’

Poulter, 28, made his debut in 2007’s Son of Rambow, before finding fame as the difficult Eustace Scrubb, cousin to the Pevensies, in The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.

Since then, the actor has appeared in films including We’re The Millers, The Maze Runner, Detroit and Midsommar – and now he joins the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

In one of the post-film credit scenes in 2017’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Ayesha (Elizabeth Debicki), Golden High Priestess of the Sovereign, reveals the birthing pod for Adam as she states that he is ‘more powerful, more beautiful and more capable of destroying the Guardians of the Galaxy’.

Adam Warlock was first introduced in the comics in the late 1960s, and his abilities include super-strength, speed, agility, flight and energy and matter manipulation, making him one of the most powerful Marvel characters ever created.

Details for the film are being tightly guarded, but production is reportedly due to start in November (which fits in with the timeline of Gunn’s tweet).

Poulter will join the cast of expected returning stars, including Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Karen Gillan, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel, as per IMDb.

Guardians’ actress Gillan, who plays Nebula in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, has recently revealed that Tom Hanks helped her out of a crisis of confidence in 2017 as her career in Hollywood began to take off.

The Doctor Who star, who had previously described herself as ‘totally fearless’, said that he took her to one side on the set of their film The Circle and told her: ‘Keep going. You’re really good.’

She added to You magazine: ‘It was the sign I was looking for. To have someone you idolise say, actually, you’re not terrible, was completely trippy. From that point, I worked on my acting and I completely rebuilt.’

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is scheduled for release on May 5, 2023.
