Canelo Alvarez Says He Has Evolved Since Floyd Mayweather Loss: ‘That Was a Long Time Ago’

Back in 2013, Canelo Alvarez was slowly picking up his career when he faced the best boxer of all times, Floyd Mayweather. ‘TBE’ was an undeniable favorite to win the fight that night, but the Mexican star, too, had some sound support coming from the fans. But in the end, things went as expected and Canelo ended up losing his contest to Mayweather.

Originally, Mayweather displayed a defensive style of fighting across all his fights. But while fighting Alvarez, he adopted an aggressive approach, thus completely schooling the young gun.

But since that fight, the p4p king never lost again. He took some noteworthy teachings from that fight and employed the same across every fight he took subsequently. Recently, he was in a chat with Brian Custer about his upcoming clash with Caleb Plant.

Here, Custer told Canelo that ‘Sweethands’ spoke about how fighters like Mayweather gave problems to him. To which he responded, “We will see. We will see. But that’s a long time ago, but I’m way different now, way different fighter now so we’ll see November 6.”

After the Floyd Mayweather fight, Alvarez worked tremendously on his defense. He was already a powerful boxer, but he turned more aggressive after that fight, thus hammering his adversaries with slick right-hand power.

On top of that, the Mexican star kept an active run in the sport and confronted the bigwigs like ‘GGG’ and more. With this, he turned sharper with time and that’s why he holds a whopping 56 wins today.

Is Canelo Alvarez the best boxer at present?

Alvarez is 31, but he shows no signs of stopping down. For now, his ultimate focus is to conquer all the super-middleweight titles and until and unless he does that, the p4p star won’t take on any primal fight.

There’s only one roadblock that Canelo has to remove and that’s the IBF super-middleweight champ, Caleb Plant.

If he gets past Plant, Alvarez will cement himself as the maiden undisputed super-middleweight champ. He’s elevating his career in the finest possible way, and there’s no denying that he’s the best boxer of recent times.
