Matteo Berrettini Advises Girlfriend Ajla Tomljanovic to Not be ‘Hard on Herself’

The young tennis power couple, Ajla Tomljanovic and Matteo Berrettini, opened up on dealing with pressure and supporting each other on the Tour. Tomljanovic and Berrettini have been officially dating since October 2019.

Since the start of the 2021 season, they are often seen cheering for one another from the player’s box. Presently, the couple is in California, as they were competing at Indian Wells 2021, where Tomljanovic lost in the fourth round, and Berrettini lost in the third.

Indeed, Tomljanovic has had a breakthrough 2021 season so far. Chiefly, the 28-year-old Croatian-Australian professional made it into the Wimbledon quarterfinals and US Open third round for the first time in her career. For this, her Italian boyfriend Berrettini credits her mindset.

“I know her, and I think I know how much she’s tough on herself,” Berrettini said. “I’m always telling her that she has to kind of tell herself that she achieved a lot during her career and has to enjoy what she’s doing.”

When Tomljanovic was asked, she said what’s been helpful for her is her ability to accept, move on and try again. Although losses could sometimes feel like a burden, she is happy to have the opportunity to play.

“The competitiveness and the losses sometimes get a little heavy,” Tomljanovic said. “Just simplifying it, always moving forward, learning from it, that’s what kind of keeps me going.”

Furthermore, about Ajla’s 2021 season, Berrettini highlighted the importance of recognizing her success and feeling good about it. “I think it’s good to feel bad in the bad moments, but it’s worth it to feel good when things are going well. So that’s what I’m telling her,” the Italian said.

Conclusively, the Italian stated that Ajla is doing great and is near her career-high ranking. She’s currently ranked no. 47 in the world, only 8 places off her career-high of 39, which she achieved in April, 2019. He added, “She’s working hard. She is a competitor. She really likes to play. I really think that she’s gonna get even better.”
