The three signs it’s time to BIN your iPhone

THE IPHONE is one of the world’s greatest smartphones – but it’s not for everybody.

If you’ve got one of Apple’s older models and aren’t sure whether to bin it, here are three reasons it may be time to move on.

1) Poor battery health

Battery life woes are among the most common reasons that people switch out their old mobile.

Smartphones batteries wear out over time, eventually leaving you with a handset that runs out of charge in just a couple of hours.

That process normally takes several years. If your phone lasts less than a day within a year of use, there’s likely something wrong with it.

To fix poor iPhone battery health, it’s advised that you do not replace the battery yourself, as this will void you phone’s warranty.

Instead, you should take it to your nearest Apple store, or post it to the company by following the instructions on its website, here.

The trouble with going via that route is that Apple charges up to £69 to replace the batteries of iPhones that are out of warranty.

If you’re already considering ditching your iPhone, it may be best to dodge the battery replacement fee and get a new handset sooner rather than later.

To preserve your iPhone battery, avoid using it in really hot weather, and don’t swipe all of your apps closed.

2) Missing out on iOS updates

Some iPhone owners are missing out on Apple’s latest major software update – potentially leaving them exposed to cyber crooks.

The iOS 15 upgrade launched on September 20, bringing a suite of new features. Not everyone, however, can get it.

Each year, Apple typically culls an older iPhone model or two from its list of handsets compatible with newer versions of iOS.

This is to offset the challenge of keeping loads of models and iOS versions running smoothly at any one time.

Surprisingly, iOS 15 is compatible with every iPhone and iPod touch model that currently runs on iOS 14.

That means anyone with an iPhone 6S and later, as well as 7th generation iPod touch owners, can install the iOS 15 update.

Those without iOS 15, however, are in hot water, as software updates are extremely important.

For a start, they mean the addition of brand new features, as well as bug fixes that improve the performance of your handset.

But they also mean security patches that prevent hackers from cracking your phone’s security using old exploits.

If you’re worried that your older iPhone is exposed to hackers, it may be time for an upgrade.

3) You fancy a change

If you’ve been on iOS for years and are keen to try something new, then maybe it’s time to ditch your iPhone.

You could pick yourself out a nice Android phone, for instance, with similar specs but a different operating system.

Android is the name for Google’s smartphone software, officially released in 2008.

Any company can make a phone and load Google’s Android onto it – because it’s free to use and customise.

That’s why we see lots of companies making Android phones, including Samsung, LG, OnePlus and Google, of course.

Android phones offer more customisation and expandable storage that allows you to keep more photos, videos and apps on your device.

They also come a lot cheaper than Apple’s mobiles.

Switching, however, does expose you to more malware than on iOS, and can be confusing for anyone who’s used to Apple’s operating system.

In other news, Apple customers in the UK are facing delays of up to five weeks to receive the latest iPhones due to a shortage of key parts.

Popular iOS camera app Halide released an update last week that gives older iPhones access to a “Macro Mode” for shooting objects up close.

This incredible iPhone trick lets you instantly scan any paper document onto your mobile.
