What are Safari extensions?

Safari extensions are pieces of software that let you change how your Safari browser works.

They operate a bit like the extensions available on Google Chrome, which can add useful tools to your web app on mobile and desktop.

Popular Chrome extensions include password managers, foreign language web page translators, grammar checkers, productivity apps and more.

Apple launched Safari extensions on September 20 with the release of iOS 15, the latest version of the iPhone operating system.

According to Apple’s website: “Safari extensions add functionality to Safari, so you can explore the web the way you want.

“Extensions can show helpful information about a webpage, display news headlines, help you use your favourite services, change the appearance of webpages and much more.

“Extensions are a great way to personalise your browsing experience.”

How to download and manage Safari extensions on iPhone

To download a Safari extension on iPhone, simply search for it in the App Store.

To browse a list of available extensions, you can also search “Safari extensions” on the App Store.

Once you’ve downloaded your first extension, a small puzzle piece icon will appear on the left side of Safari’s address bar.

Tap it and a menu that pops up will show your current extensions, as well as a “manage extensions” section that lets you toggle them on and off.

You can also manage your extensions by heading to Settings > Safari > Extensions.

In this menu, you can tap “more extensions” to view more of them in the App Store.
