“It Feels Strange”: Petra Kvitova Upon Ending Her 2021 Season at Indian Wells

Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova is one of the most successful players on the WTA Tour. She has even maintained her place at the top for a decade now. However, she recently ended her 2021 season at Indian Wells after losing to Victoria Azarenka in the third round. Although feeling strange, the Czech Republican expressed her gratitude towards the year of tennis she has had.

Traditionally, players compete at Indian Wells in March instead of October, and that’s why Kvitova felt a bit strange ending it there. However, she revealed joy over fans coming back and the hunger to compete again next year.

Even though it wasn’t the best season of her career, 31-year-old Petra Kvitova played exceptional tennis all year round. Notably, she also added her 28th WTA title at Doha.

Overall, the Czech Republican registered a 28-16 win-loss record in singles. Considering this, she could not make it into the Top 8 for WTA Finals, 2021. Regardless, she is happy that the long, tiresome season has finally ended.

“My 2021 season has come to an end,” Kvitova wrote on Twitter. “It feels strange to finish it after Indian Wells (usually in March!), but it has been a strange season, I guess. I’ll always be grateful for the experiences gained, even the tough ones, and the biggest thing I’m thankful for this season is having the fans back with us.”

Furthermore, Kvitova added that she is looking forward to competing at the Australian Open next year. However, before that, she would be taking some time off tennis.

“I’m finishing the season tired but still with a hunger to fight inside me, another positive! So now it’s time for a much-needed vacation, for some Petra time, and then I plan to be ready to go again in Australia in January. Until then, keep smiling,” Kvitova concluded.

Notably, Kvitova competed in all four Grand Slam tournaments in 2021 but couldn’t record a successful run in any of them. Her best result in major tournaments came at the US Open, where she reached the third round.

Hopefully, the Czech professional will come back stronger next year and improve her Grand Slam results. Do you think Kvitova can win a major title in 2022?
