“Nothing Compared to How Impressive She Can Become”: Patrick Mouratoglou on Coco Gauff’s Present Form

Coco Gauff is one of the most promising players on the WTA tour. Having turned professional at 14, Gauff has already established herself as a formidable opponent over the last three years and has all the qualities to become a future great.

Being just 17-years-old, the American is a Top-20 WTA ranked player and has made a name by performing impeccably at Grand Slam events. During the 2021 season, Gauff reached finished as the quarterfinalist at French Open and also reached the fourth round at the Wimbledon Championships.

Serena Williams’ coach praises 17-year-old Coco Gauff

Recently, during an interview with NBC, Patrick Mouratoglou talked about when he saw Gauff for the first time. Since the age of ten, Gauff has been training at Patrick Mouratoglou’s academy in France, for which she earned a sponsorship.

Mouratoglou, who has been coaching Serena Williams for ten years now, admired Gauff’s success at such a young age and feels she can dominate the tour.

“I remember when I saw her for the first time she was 10 years old. She came to my Academy and I thought, wow, she’s such a natural athlete. That’s one thing and second, mentally, she’s something, she’s special like she’s top 20 in the world now at 17. She’s impressive, but probably nothing compared to how impressive she can become,” said Mouratoglou.

So far, Gauff has won two singles titles in her career, the 2019 Linz Open and the 2021 Emilia Romagna Open. Apart from making her mark in singles, Gauff has been equally impressive at the doubles events.

She has won three WTA doubles titles with Caty McNally. In fact, the team of Coco-McNally ended as the runner-up at the 2021 US Open and have finished as the quarterfinalist at the Australian for two years in a row since 2020.

Meanwhile, at the ongoing Indian Wells, Gauff lost in the second round to Paula Badosa in straight sets. Up next, Gauff would compete at the 2021 Kremlin Cup in Moscow, which starts next week.
