Rory McIlroy Claims He’s the Best Player in the World

Rory McIlroy has not been on the top of his game for quite a while, despite that he believes he still has potential. When the pandemic hit, the Irishman was the best golfer in the world. However, inconsistencies and changes led to a massive downfall in his game, and that led to a few abysmal seasons for him.

The former world number one’s only win this season came at the Wells Fargo Championship earlier this year. And this win took McIlroy came after nearly two years. Inconsistency and a swing change have marred his game.

He attributed his now poor swing to Bryson DeChambeau’s stellar performance at the 2020 US Open. In his chase for speed and length, he said, his swing had become flawed. However, the 4-time major winner is still optimistic about his game.

Rory McIlroy reveals he is not far from reclaiming the number 1 spot

Rory McIlroy will be playing in the CJ Cup currently underway in Las Vegas. In a press conference, he was asked what he thought of his game and his current world ranking, which has been around an all-time low in 12 years. They asked him, “Do you think world number 1 is a realistic possibility?”

“I think when I play my best, I’m the best player in the world,” admitted McIlroy. “I haven’t played like that for a while, though, but I don’t feel like I need to go that far back to whenever the pandemic hit, whatever it was, 18 months ago, when I was the No 1 player in the world.”

Talking about the constantly improving game of everyone around him, he says, “There’s a ton of great players now that play obviously really, really good golf. I feel like the talent pool is just getting deeper and deeper every year so you have to strive to keep trying to get better to just stay where you wanna stay.”

“It’s not the position I want to be in,” revealed McIlroy. However, he admitted that, “There are so many other guys that are trying to do the same thing as I’m doing and I realise the competition gets tougher each and every year. You just have to try to not just keep up with that, but try to become better.”

Well, it’s difficult not to agree with him. As when on top of his game, he does play like he’s the best golfer in the world! What do you think?
