‘Spit My Coffee’ – Jim Furyk Reacts to Phil Mickelson’s Cheeky Twitter Banter

It is safe to say that Phil Mickelson is against the new Model Local Rule, which needs all non-putters to be 46 inches starting next January. The 51-year-old has been quite vocal about how he feels, with others joining him eventually. Recently, while going back and forth with users on Twitter, they got Jim Furyk involved in a small banter.

Mickelson made his PGA TOUR Champions debut earlier this year. Having played four events, Mickelson has won three of them, including the Constellation Furyk and Friends.

However, here’s how Furyk was included in Mickelson’s elaborate Twitter banter.

What did Phil Mickelson say about Jim Furyk?

“Stupid is as stupid does.”Mrs Gump

Really though, are the amateurs trying their best to govern the professional game the stupid ones? Or the professionals for letting them? https://t.co/3zt4LyH3UW

A couple of days ago, USGA and R&A announced a new rule. Mickelson’s reaction was instantaneous, as the 45-time PGA Tour winner took to Twitter, quoting what he feels is a fitting line from the movie Forrest Gump. “‘Stupid is as stupid does.’ Mrs. Gump. Really though, are the amateurs trying their best to govern the professional game the stupid ones? Or the professionals for letting them?” he wrote.

Mickelson’s strong words and opinions attracted a crowd, engaging and waiting to see what he does next. However, the Twitter interaction from there on turned as light-hearted as it could.

If anything, the tour trying to outdistance itself has hurt the game more than and increase in driving distance. Disney was a great example of that. Name a course under 7200 that @jimfuryk wouldn’t dominate.

“Timuquana,” Mickelson responded, clearly referencing Furyk and Friends’ venue – Timuquana Country Club in Jacksonville. Everyone, including Furyk himself, found the intelligent comeback hilarious.

“I just spit my coffee out…… That was funny,” Furyk wrote.

What was Mickelson trying to say?

As mentioned above, Mickelson won the inaugural Constellation Furyk and Friends event. Furyk was also at the event, who finished T4. Naturally, Mickelson opted to have some fun with Furyk. The 2003 US Open winner also joined the PGA TOUR Champions earlier this year.

Mickelson even spoke about Furyk after the match. “He played some really good golf. He made a great up-and-down on 13 and the shot on 14 was really impressive,” he said.

The PGA Tour icon further stated that he was lucky to get to birdies, which certainly helped him win. What do you think of Mickelson’s comments on the new rule?
