Adele puts her soul on the line in haunting comeback single Easy On Me

To say the entire world was readying themselves for Adele’s new single is a total understatement, with thousands eagerly watching the premiere of Easy On Me at midnight.

After a wait of six years for new music, the 33-year-old didn’t disappoint and put her soul on the line in the ballad, with her feelings pouring out over a piano accompaniment.

Speaking previously about the track, she said that she penned it for son Angelo, to explain her divorce from ex-husband Simon Konecki and there is no doubt that she is unflinchingly honest in the lyrics, as she begs for understanding over why she is putting herself first.

‘I changed who I was to put you both first but now I give up,’ she belts out, before pleading, ‘Go easy on me baby / I was still a child / Didn’t get the chance to feel / The world around me.’

Letting slip on what we can expect from her upcoming album, which will be released on November 19, she said that she got into the studio for her son, making it her most emotional release yet.

Confirming that 30 will be with us on November 19, she wrote on Instagram: ‘I’ve learned a lot of blistering home truths about myself along the way. I’ve shed many layers but also wrapped myself in new ones.

‘Discovered genuinely useful and wholesome mentalities to lead with, and I feel like I’ve finally found my feeling again. I’d go so far as to say that I’ve never felt more peaceful in my life.’

That peace shines through in the music video, which begins with her almost comforting voice on the end of a phone call, as she prepares to leave her home for the last time.

However, instead of revelling in the heartbreak, she seems happy and free as she steps foot into the next chapter of her life, with her signature laugh making a welcome appearance in the last few moments.

Easy On Me is more stripped down than other songs from her catalogue, there is no belting chorus like Rolling In The Deep or Hello, but in a way it hits harder than anything she’s presented us with before.

It is knowing and powerful, and Adele is just as compelling as ever.
