Alex Morgan Reveals She Suffered Breakdowns After USWNT Failure At Tokyo Olympics

During the last and final episode of ‘Ready for Anything’, Alex Morgan revealed how difficult and different Tokyo 2020 was for her. Alexandra is a two-time World Cup winner with the USWMT and currently plays for the Orlando Pride.

The episode titled ‘Mental Health Always Comes First’ saw Morgan talk about her super challenging experience in Tokyo. She opened up on the feeling of leaving behind her 1-year-old toddler back home and dealing with a non-satisfactory result.

“It was a shock”- Alex Morgan

Morgan came home with a bronze medal, but her Olympic experience wasn’t what she hoped for. The USWNT lost their first match against Sweden and that hit Morgan hard.

She talks about how, after coming back home, she had multiple breakdowns, going through waves of emotions repeatedly.

“And I felt like when I came home, I had just wave after wave of emotion, kinda like crying for no reason. You know, I didn’t know why I was crying in the moment. I just would tell Servando like, if I just start crying, don’t worry, it’s not like anything you did or whatever,” Alex said.

Even though they eventually went on to win a Bronze medal, Morgan believes that the feeling from the initial loss stayed with the team.

“Like it’s just like a month of catching up with my emotion. Unfortunately, the vibe from the first game, just like lingered through the tournament,” she added.

However, she is thankful that they got to bring a medal home, which in itself is a big feat.

“That was like really difficult, but also we were kind of put in a corner where we were like, we have this opportunity to still win a medal. Yeah, it’s not a gold, but we have the opportunity to bring home a medal and that’s important in itself.”

Unusual Olympics

Due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, the Tokyo Olympics 2020 saw a lot of different rules and regulations. Players were not allowed to bring their families and were confined to a bubble, living in strict isolation.

Hence, Alex Morgan feels Tokyo 2020 was a really different Olympics. Speaking of the same, she said, “You can’t go outside of the hotel at all. Like, our phones were tracked, and also we wanted to stay in Japan and not get kicked out. We also wanted to stay safe and stay healthy.”
